"Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated," Carnival said, "but cannot yet be confirmed." Carnival Freedom departed from Port Canaveral in Florida on Monday for a five-day cruise, according to the company. A Carnival Cruise Line ship caught fire Thursday morning during a visit to the Turks and Caicos islands, the company has confirmed. The ship, which has a capacity of around 2100 guests, is based at Port Everglades in the winter and in the summer between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska.

Port Canaveral, Florida is located on a barrier island between the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean just north of Cape Canaveral. Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral are also booming. The latter was the world’s top cruise port one year before PortMiami took the honors. Carnival subsequently canceled cruises on Carnival Freedom leaving Port Canaveral on March 25 and on March 29. At the time, Carnival Cruise Line verified that a fire broke out in the funnel of the ship while it was in Grand Turk.

While initially the cruise line said the schedule would not be affected, further investigation found more damage than suspected. Scheduled cruises for Monday, March 25 and Friday, March 29 have been canceled. It was intended to call on the Carnival private island of Princess Cay but had rerouted toward Freeport due to adverse weather.

“We are relieved to confirm that there have been no injuries resulting from the fire,” Capt. Dan Blanchard, UnCruise’s owner and CEO, said in the release. “Our highly trained crew promptly extinguished the fire using established emergency protocols, and CO2 was successfully deployed for everyone's safety.” Eleven crew members remained on board. The ship was carrying 128 passengers, most of whom were sightseeing on land Wednesday, in addition to 82 crew members, according to Portland officials and the U.S. Both said the crew member who suffered burns was the only person injured in the fire. Repairs are set to begin on the ship's funnel after all passengers are off the ship. According to the statement, most of the ship's 2,504 passengers were ashore at the time the fire broke out.

PortMiami, Florida’s largest port, served 7.3 million passengers during the 12-month fiscal year 2023. That was tops for cruise ports worldwide, nearly twice the four million passengers seen the prior year and more than its previous record of 6.8 million passengers set in 2019. The incidents come as the cruise industry is breaking records for number of passengers. "All guests and crew are safe, and the ship's guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore," Carnival added.

This is the second time in less than two years this cruise ship's funnel has caught on fire and disrupted the schedule. "All guests and crew are safe, and the ship's guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore," Carnival said added. The company says its "emergency response team quickly activated and extinguished" the flames.

On Jan. 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia struck a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The ship, which was owned by a Carnival Corporation subsidiary, when the captain steered the 952-foot, 13-deck ship close to the shore to "impress the passengers" and tore a 160-foot gash in the port hull. A fire broke out in the funnel area in May 2022 while it was docked in Grand Turk. Three scheduled sailings were canceled while the ship was repaired at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Carnival noted in a post on X Saturday that eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike. The ship had left Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, on Monday for a five-day cruise, officials said. In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.
