The Historical Background of Juneteenth:

Americans on Monday will celebrate Juneteenth, marking the day the last enslaved people in the country learned they were free. OUR CHILDREN CAN SOARMichelle CookOur fight for racial justice is one that has been carried on by people for generations. Through beautiful illustrations, this rhythmically told picture book celebrates the diverse pursuits and accomplishments of Black leaders throughout history and showcases how each generation's work enables the following to reach new heights. There’s been some debate about whether the Juneteenth flag is the most appropriate symbol for the holiday. Haith said he understood why people could have some hesitancy around commemorating the freedom of slaves by using a red, white, and blue flag, which some see as a tribute to the oppressors of Black Americans. "As we continue to celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, we remember and recognize how the Black community continues to make a way out of no way, overcoming trials and celebrating triumphs while honoring the place and price of freedom."

There’s a push to use the day to remember the sacrifices that were made for freedom in the United States — especially in these racially and politically charged times. The national reckoning over race ignited by the 2020 murder of George Floyd by police helped set the stage for Juneteenth to become the first new federal holiday since 1983, when Martin Luther King Jr. The next year, the free people of Galveston celebrated Juneteenth, an observance that has continued and has spread around the world. Events around the holiday include concerts, parades and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. Although President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in 1863, it could not be enforced in many places in the South until the Civil War ended in 1865.

Juneteenth? In a vaxxed summer? Here’s how Black L.A. is celebrating

U.S. President Joe Biden signs the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in the East Room of the White House on June 17, 2021 in Washington, DC. The Juneteenth holiday marks the end of slavery in the United States and the Juneteenth National Independence Day will become the 12th legal federal holiday — the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. With the end of slavery, searching for family members who had been separated or sold away became the focus of many formerly enslaved individuals. The number of years of separation did not deter people from hoping to reunite with lost loved ones.

Capital B spoke with Ben Haith, the flag’s creator, and others to learn more about its history and impact. This story is part of a special Juneteenth project with Vox which explores the ongoing struggle for freedom for Black Americans. Listen to music that symbolizes hope, joy and perseverance and honors Black Americans' lives, legacy, resilience and self-sufficiency. The coming of summer heralds cook-outs, line dancing, and brightly colored t-shirts iconic of Black family reunions. On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom.

Juneteenth is a day that marks the freedom of enslaved people. The history behind Juneteenth is tied to acts during the Civil War and years of struggle to truly end slavery. Juneteenth’s flag is a white star within a resplendent starburst set against a proud backdrop of red and blue. It symbolizes the freedom of four million enslaved people and hope for African Americans and Blacks displaced by the diaspora. On Juneteenth—that is, June 19 of each year—you’ll see the flag waving high over state capitols and city buildings.

Spend the day learning more about racial equality and the history of the social justice movement by visiting culturally significant sites. Chartreuse (also think lady’s mantle or creeping Jenny) is one of the best colors for lightening a planting scheme. Set to be built in Fort Worth's Southside neighbourhood, the museum will be led by Opal Lee – an advocate who is often described as the "grandmother of Juneteenth". Lee played a major role in Juneteenth being declared a federal holiday by president Joe Biden. Despite being instrumental to the birth of the United States, Black Americans were long disregarded as only ¾ of a person. Therefore, they weren’t treated humanely or even considered American citizens. The red, white and blue colors communicate that the enslaved Americans, and their descendants, were all Americans.

It’s a celebration of Black patriots and Black patriotism past and present. It’s not nearly as instantly recognizable as the American flag, but the Juneteenth flag is gaining increasing significance, not just for Black Americans but for all Americans. Placing a decorative pot on an axis stops the eye for a moment in a delightful way. This is an often-repeated design element at Sissinghurst as well as at Hollister House.

It wasn’t until two years later in 1865 that Union army and General Gordon Granger finally reached Texas and the end of slavery was implemented. Juneteenth stands for June 19th, the day federal troops went to Galveston, Texas, and took control of the state. While the process wasn’t instant — slavery officially ended months later with the 13th Amendment — it was the beginning of emancipation and celebrations broke out across the state. Most U.S. states now hold celebrations honoring Juneteenth as a holiday or a day of recognition, like Flag Day.
